Relaxation/Swedish Massage is the name given to the
5 basic massage techniques. Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Vibration and Tapotoment . These
techniques can be given the credit of being the basis for almost all Schools of Massage in the United States. These
techniques can be applied light or deep according to the needs and wants of the client..
Effleurage, a
French word meaning "to skim" or "to touch lightly on", is a series of massage strokes used in Swedish massage to warm up
the muscle
Petrissage are massage
movements with applied pressure which are deep and compress the underlying muscles. Kneading, wringing, skin rolling and pick-up-and-squeeze
are the petrissage movements. They are all performed with the padded palmar surface of the hand, the surface of the finger
and also the thumbs
Tapotement is a
specific stroke and movement and technique and motion used in Swedish massage technique. It is a rhythmic percussion, most
frequently administered with the edge of the palm or the tips of the fingers
Friction a technique
which moves the skin across other tissues.

Combination of these movements on certain body parts or over the entire body consitute a "Swedish
